The pilot of a Boeing CH-47 Chinook, a helicopter equipped with two tandem rotors, performed a particularly delicate maneuver during a rescue mission on Mount Hood, Oregon. The day before, a 27-year-old wanted to end his life on the mountain but finally changed his mind and called the police.
When help was able to reach him, it was too late to bring him back safely and the group had to wait for the arrival of a helicopter scheduled for the next day.
The Chinook’s pilot had no choice but to land by putting only the rear of the aircraft, the rest remaining suspended in the air. Rescuers had to get out of the helicopter on all fours to avoid getting caught by the propellers.
